Where’s Your Focus?

I recently encouraged my readers to listen on YouTube to a song entitled “Thank You” by Walter Hawkins. I was surprised to get the following texted response: “Trump train!!!” Well, if I were in a pulpit preaching on being thankful to God, it would be very disheartening to hear that kind of response.

So, my texted response was as follows: “Not sure what that means, but if that’s anyone’s primary focus, then hymns, choir songs, and good sermons will not help. If we insist on focusing on the flaws of government leaders rather than on the power and protection of God, then we should tear Psalm 121 out of our bibles. Agree?” Granted, believers don’t agree on all governmental policies, about all leaders and candidates, just as they didn’t before, during, and after the Civil War. We don’t even agree on various Bible interpretations. But we should agree on the essentials. I believe thankfulness to God without distractions over politics and politicians is paramount. Otherwise, it’s sinful. Note the following words from God: ““Now consider this, you who forget God, Or I will tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver. ‘He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God’” (Psalm 50:22-23). Our responsibilities as believers are to…

Pray to God

Trust God

Praise God

Live for God (be holy)

Tell about God (evangelize)

Teach about God (edify)

Defend the faith (be apologetic)

Care for our immediate family

Do charitable work for God’s glory

Expect Jesus’ imminent return

We must not be distracted by whoever is in whatever political office and allow sin to blind us and thus neglect our commitment to each of the above. Thus, we must comply with Philippians 2:5-11. It’s my prayer that we do. Blessings!
