My response to a dear brother who asked about understanding Isaiah 14:4-20:
“Good afternoon my brother, As you may know, views vary on the identity of the person in Isa. 14:4-20. The context seems to clearly point to the king of Babylon (v. 4). Others say it’s a reference to:
1. Venus (Lucifer = “Shining One”)
2. Satan, being addressed through the Babylonian king
3. Maybe Sennacherib (ruled 705-681 BC), king of Assyria, but who was also king of Babylon which was a vassal state during his reign.
4.It’s also possible that he is
a. Tiglath-Pilese III (ruled 745-727 BC),
b. Sargon II (ruled 722-705), or
c. Mushezib-Marduk (ruled 692-689 BC).
Personally, I see this passage as a veiled reference to Satan. I could be wrong, but it sure seems correct to me.
Some connect this passage with Ezekiel 28:11-19. There also the language seems to address someone beyond the human king of Tyre. Regardless of whom those passages are addressing, it is absolutely certain that Satan fell from heaven - Luke 10:18.
