A dear brother sent a video to get my thoughts on the issue of titles for church leaders. Check out the video and my response below:
Good morning Mike C. Many church leaders put their stock in titles as the minister pointed out. They love status symbols and compliments which boost their ego. There’s nothing wrong with titles, but they don’t necessarily reflect the true character of the individual with the title. “Apostle” was a special title for men whom Peter said, “Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection” (Acts 1:21-22).
No one meets those qualifications today. There were false apostles back then (2 Cor. 11:13; Rev. 2:2), as there are today. While respect is what church leaders earn, titles simply indicate the kind of service to which they were called by God (Heb. 5:4). Genuine love for God and humility are highly required. Otherwise, we are disqualified to be church leaders (1 Tim. 3:6-7). Much more can be said, but I hope that helps.
Blessings!
