Responding to a Wayward Son

My son and a woman are living together while unmarried. After requesting a meeting with them for counseling, I haven’t gotten a response. However, today I got the following text:

“Good morning Dad

I just want to say thank you for all of your love and support. I know I have let you down with my decisions. I am sorry for that. I am doing good working steady and believe it or not I am running into a lot of Christians. I know it is no accident

I love you Dad

Have a good day

Scott”

My response:

“Thanks for the update Scott. Letting me down doesn't curtail my love and prayers for you. What's important, my son, is confessing your sin before God, repent, and forsake the sin, not continuing in it. I'm glad you have a steady job and contact with Christian friends. If those things are blessings from God ("no accident"), they are His gracious way of calling you away from your sin before He sends warning signs and, at last, chastisement. Also, if you haven't done so, you should apologize to James for the way you moved out. He's a gracious brother, and I'm sure he will forgive you. So, my son, forgiveness from God is much more important. The ball is in your hand to confess, repent, and forsake your sin so that you may experience the spiritual refreshment of God's forgiveness and cleansing.
