Natural Goodness is Not The Same as Spiritual Goodness

I listened to Pastor Andy Woods’ teaching on Gen. 20:14-18 (read it). I noticed that his discussion regarding Abimelech’s good acts toward Abraham and Sarah led to discussing total depravity and his fine tuning its definition. The passages he used (Gen. 3:22; Matt. 7:11; Acts 10:1-2; Rom. 2:14-15) was to show that sinful man, regardless of the degree of his wickedness, is capable of performing natural goodness but not in any way spiritual goodness. Natural goodness is still “filthy rags” when evaluated for soul salvation but can be beneficial in the natural realm. Andy’s scripture references are very helpful. So, while unsaved folks can do good things, being totally depraved keeps them not only from being able to save themselves but also from even understanding and seeking salvation (Rom. 3:10-12). In that sense sinners are totally depraved. Therefore, it doesn’t mean the unsaved can’t do any natural good at all. It means, being totally depraved, they can’t do anything to get right with God.
