My daughter’s question about Joyce Meyer

My response to my daughter’s question about Joyce Meyer:

“With a few exceptions, Meyer’s ministry’s Doctrinal Statement/Statement of Beliefs looks impressive. I disagree with it on some points.

1. She believes the baptism of the Holy Spirit follows faith in Christ and makes one speak in tongues, but the Bible says faith and receiving the Spirit are simultaneous (John 7:37-39). That’s because anyone without the Holy Spirit doesn’t belong to Christ (Rom. 8:9). The Bible also refer to “tongues” in the sense of intellectual languages. They are useless unless someone with the gift of interpretation makes them understandable (1 Cor. 14:5, 13, 27-28). Tongues are not to be addressed to believers, but to unbelievers who can understand the language (14:22). People who claim to speak in tongues need an interpreter and to know that whatever they speak still has to be based on Scripture. God is not giving any new revelation outside His written word (Proverbs30:5-6).

2. She is disobeying the Bible by, as a female preacher/pastor, preaching and exercising authority over men in the Church (1 Tim . 2:11-15; 2 Cor.14:34-35). However, spiritually mature women can teach other women (Titus 2:3-5). This is usually done at special women’s Bible studies (Pat belongs to an international one called Bible Study Fellowship), women groups at churches, and home groups. That’s okay as long as the women are under male leadership. Using certain Bible passages to justify women being over men in the church reflects a rebellious attitude, which is a further disqualification.

3. She emphasizes miraculous healing as long as one has faith. I can’t find that in the Bible.

A reliable source gives further evidence that Joyce Meyer is not qualified to teach the Bible. In spite of her good-sounding Doctrinal Statement, there’s reason to regard her as a false teacher. She associates with other well-known false teachers (see https://www.equip.org/articles/the-teachings-of-joyce-meyer/).

Below is her ministry’s Doctrinal Statement. It doesn’t mean she really believes it. Jesus said, “ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matt. 7:21-23). That means one’s lack of faith in Christ was overshadowed by a lot of impressive things which God considered as “iniquity.” Joyce Meyer needs to sincerely repent and put her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
