Motherhood and Salvation

Motherhood began in the Garden of Eden when Eve gave birth to her first son, Cain. Her name, which means “life giver,” was given to her by Adam because, as Moses explains, “because she was the mother of all living” (Gen. 3:20).

Unfortunately, though, motherhood began after the fall of man into Sin. Therefore, everyone born thereafter except Jesus inherited the sin nature of his or her parents.

The first act of sin after the fall recorded in Scripture was Cain’s murder of his brother Abel. Sin was further manifested in the polygamous marriage of Lamech and his killing a man out of vengeance (Gen. 4:23-24).

However, there was good news for Adam and Eve, but God told the devil about it first. God had told the serpent (Satan), “I will put enmity between you and the woman , and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel” (Gen. 3:15). This passage is known as the “protevangelium,” meaning the “first gospel.” It is good news for all humans at all times because it teaches that the woman’s seed (Christ) will be bruised at the heel (die for our sins and rise again), but the serpent’s seed (Satan) will be bruised at the head (destroyed with a fatal blow).

The woman’s preeminent seed eventually was Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Christ. The good news/gospel is “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3b-4).

Therefore, though humans are still born in sin, the good news is that “by one offering He (Jesus) has perfected for all time those who are sanctified” (set apart for God’s use [Hebrews 10:14]). Yeshua HaMashiach has made salvation complete (Col.2:10) and our standing before God is perfect.

Therefore, while motherhood is natural and temporary, salvation is spiritual and eternal.
