How Do I Study Prophecy?

I have a dear friend who believes the New Covenant (Testament) is a “renewed and restored” Old Covenant. As I understand his conclusion, it is based on an allegorical interpretation of Scripture. That means he skirts the literal meaning of Scripture by looking for a deeper spiritual meaning. That’s like believing that each one in the four corners of a dollar bill make it equal four dollars. The literal interpretation says it’s one dollar, just one 💵.

Here’s my explanation to my friend why I believe in two completely different covenants:

I understand my brother. I’m careful not to be dogmatic with my position on prophecy. What led to my conclusion/view is the literal, grammatical, and historical hermeneutical principle. Therefore, I hold to two different covenants - the Old and New covenants according to Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:7-13. I don’t see how the words “renewed” or “restored” can be applied to the New Covenant if interpreted literally, grammatically, and historically.

However, they can apply to future Israel but not the New Covenant. The Old Covenant is “obsolete” (Heb. 8:13). Like you, I didn’t understand those “high dollar” terms (including “eschatology,” “pretrib,” “premil,” etc.) either. My conclusions were reached as I studied the Scripture with the hermeneutical principles mentioned above.

Blessings!
