God’s Excellent Name in all the Earth (Psalm 8)

God’s “fingerprints” are imprinted all over His creation, in heaven (Psalm 19:1-6) and earth (Psalm 8:I, 9). When He saw His finished pristine creation, He concluded that “…it was very good…” (Genesis 1:31). Therefore, His excellent name is still plainly revealed in His marvelous creation (Rom. 1:19-20). So, the psalmist could proclaim, “O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!” (Psalm 8:1, 9). While His glory is manifested in heaven by the celestial scenery designed by His “fingers,” the excellence and power of His name is revealed on earth through the praise of innocent children (8:3), His glorious image( “glory and honor” [8:5]) in man, and His benevolent assignment given to man (8:6-8). The answer to the question in 8:4 – “What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?” – is clearly answered in Genesis 1:26-28, that man was created “in the image of God.” Although the world and its inhabitants are under the curse of sin (Romans 3:23; 8:20-25), God’s name is still excellent (or majestic) “in all the earth.” In closing, let’s comply with the psalmist’s words, “Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth” (Psalm 96:8-9).

Hallelujah!
