Giving Gifts for Christmas

A text from a brother: “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew‬ ‭2:10-11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬“ Clarity on this scripture! I know the reason behind Christmas to celebrate the birth of our savior and knowing that he’s the greatest gift ever to be given to all of mankind. Is this the reason why people give gifts to one another!”

My response:

“Yes. It’s a tradition that developed from a misinterpretation of that passage.

First, it’s not authorized by Scripture (nor is the Christmas celebration).

Secondly, the gifts were given to no one but Jesus. Giving gifts for Christmas is not necessarily wrong, but unfortunately, it has led to materialistic thinking and a secular view of the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. It also has attributed to a folklore making “Santa Clause” (who distributes gifts) the major character, blurring people’s focus on Christ. It’s a subtle lie fostered by Satan. A fat bearded man in a red suit, black boots, riding on a sleigh pulled by reindeers in the sky captivates precious young imaginations. I was highly disillusioned when I came to know the truth at 13.

Thirdly, since only gold, myrrh, and frankincense were the gifts, why not be consistent and only give such Today? And, since they were given to the Head of the church (Col. 1:18), why not give those gifts to local churches who can distribute them to the needy?

Lastly, look at what a wrong interpretation of Scripture has led to – decorations, plays, parties, sales, debt, stress, etc., and a lot of regret mostly on January 2nd. So, what should believers do? In my case, I concentrate on the incarnation, it’s profound meaning, it’s divine purpose, and the prophetic outcome. That helps me to (1) celebrate the real meaning and purpose of Christmas, and (2) witness to people.” It all boils down to one’s personal choice (Romans 14:22-23).

Blessings!
