Giving as a Non-church Member

Greetings Bro. J, I trust all is well with you, Mrs. M, and your precious children. Thank you for your question. Regarding giving when you’re not a local church member, I’ve had to face that issue myself.

First, like you, I would give to churches I visited. How much was a matter of what I purposed in my heart (2 Cor. 9:7), but I never felt obligated to give more than 10% of my income. I’d save some of the money I didn’t give when not attending church and donate some to Christian ministries and charities. The saved money would go to the church I eventually joined. To be honest, your biggest challenge is finding a local church to join, not giving. God wants to use you inside as well as outside the local church. I realize finding a church of your choice can be very difficult, especially nowadays, but I’m sure there is a church somewhere in Washington DC that needs a person like you with your gifts and commitment to serve for God’s glory. “Dark churches” (those lacking biblical teaching and godly examples) need God’s light that He shines through His servants like you. If you still don’t feel led to join a local church, pray about starting a home Bible study with unchurched friends and colleagues. You can give financially toward that ministry once it is named and a bank account is opened for it. You’ll want to consider getting a 501c3 tax status, depending upon your vision for the future of that ministry. I admire your willingness to give toward the Lord’s service and to charity. I hope my thoughts are of some help. Blessings!
