Follow-up on Apostates and Backsliders

A brother asked, “So Rev Proctor, it's safe to say that the backslider repents Apostate can't. Samson was an example of a backslider, and Judas was the example of an apostate.”

My response:

“Yes, Kevin. Judas never believed Jesus was the Christ/Messiah, but he admired Him as a powerful Jewish man with good words and deeds who could overthrow the Roman Empire. Judas was strongly disappointed as a Zealot (an ancient Jewish revolutionary) because Jesus showed no signs of using His power to bring down Rome. He considered ‘abundant life’ a political accomplishment rather than a spiritual work requiring Jesus to die for sins and be raised from the dead. To Judas, that was foolishness. ‘For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God' (1 Cor. 1.8). Today that same attitude permeates the world, including most churches where apostates are very comfortable. They want to overthrow biblically-based churches, using false accusations and unjust laws."
